DEFINING THE TERMS
Allantoin- Derived from comfrey root; promotes healing, protects and softens, and is anti-inflammatory. Has the ability to help heal wounds, sores and stimulates the growth of healthy tissue.
Aloe Vera Gel- Aloe vera helps improve hydration, soothes and heals skin. Chemical analysis has shown the presence of mucopolysacharides, a natural moisturizing factor. Aloe vera also has renown healing properties is anti-inflammatory and can soothe and help heal cuts, grazes, burns and insect bites. True aloe vera is watery and thin. Thicker products that you may see in stores have been chemically thickened and are highly diluted.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA)- Alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs, are commonly found in different concentrations in many products. The most commonly used alpha hydroxy acids are glycolic, lactic, malic, citric and tartaric acids. These mild acids serve to remove the outer layer of dull skin and leave skin with a rejuvenated appearance. Some of these acids are derived from fruit sources, particularly citrus fruits, apples and grapes. Some of the alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, are found in sugar cane. Others, such as lactic acid, are found in milk. Products containing AHA's may increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun and may increase your chances of sunburn. Use a sunscreen and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards.
Apple Cider Vinegar - Apple cider vinegar is well known for many of its internal uses, but is also extremely therapeutic when used externally. It helps to maintain healthy skin and hair by restoring a healthy pH level. It soothes sunburn, cleanses and disinfects wounds, helps to heal bruises, helps with itchy scalp, dandruff and hair loss and soothes aches and pains. Used in bath water or in a clay facial or body wrap, it can help soothe itchy, irritated skin. Apple cider vinegar is also helpful to dogs. It is great for maintaining a healthy, shiny coat, works as a repellent for fleas, ticks and other insects, and alleviates hot spots. Feeding 1 -2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar along with regular food can prevent dog urine from yellowing lawns and can ease the pains of arthritis.
Ascorbic Acid - Vitamin C, also known the topical vitamin C, is available in many skin care products. Scientific data have shown that Vitamin C will help increase the amount of collagen production in the skin. It is also a natural anti-inflammatory that helps in reversing some of the effects of sun damage to the skin. By increasing the amount of collagen in the skin, the fine lines will be reduced. Vitamin C is one of the many active ingredients to topical agents sold on this web site, and can play a vital role in a regular skin care regimen.
Baking Soda - (sodium bicarbonate) Considered to be a natural cleanser, deodorizer and an excellent dirt remover. It soothes the skin while it gently cleanses and is great for cleaning pores and removing excess facial oils. It leaves skin feeling soft and clean. When mixed with citric acid, you can make effervescent bath salts or bath bombs.
Basil - Good for insect bites, natural insect repellent.
Beeswax - Known for it’s moisturizing qualities.
Bentonite Clay - A clay derived from naturally occurring volcanic ash sediments here in the US. When mixed with water, it becomes very slippery, almost gel-like. Commonly used in shaving soap and makes an invigorating body or face mask. Great for treating problem skin and poison ivy. Good for all skin types.
Beta Carotene - Also known as pro Vitamin A. This is found in plants and many animal tissues and is what causes carrots to have their orange tint. It is also used as a coloring agent in several cosmetics. It is a precursor to Vitamin A. An excessive amount of beta carotene in the blood can lead to a yellow-red pigmentation of the skin that can be interpreted as jaundice.
Borax - Also known as Desert Salt. Excavated mainly in California. Borax is used as a water softener, deodorizer, and mild astringent with some antiseptic properties.
Calendula - Antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. Valuable skin healing properties. Use for burns, cuts, insect bites, rashes, eczema ,cracked rough skin and acne, also, good for sunburn and athletes foot.
Carrots - Rich in Vitamin A & C .Good for chapped, dry skin.
Cedarwood - Astringent, great for oily skin & acne, also, a natural insect repellant.
Chamomile - Antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal & antibacterial. Helps inflamed or irritated skin. Good for dry, sensitive or chapped skin.
Cinnamon - Recommended as a skin astringent.
Citric Acid - Widely used in the cosmetic industry. Derived from citrus fruits by fermentation of crude sugars. Used as a preservative and to adjust acid-alkali balance. Citric acid is said to have antioxidant and toning properties. Citric acid is one of the alpha-hydroxy acids. AHA's are used not only to reduce wrinkles but also to brighten your skin. The "new" alpha hydroxy acid skin treatments are simply made up of lactic acid (milk), citric acid (citrus), glycolic (sugar cane), malic (apples), and tartaric (grapes) acids.

Also makes a great thickener for creams and lotions. It is the primary ingredient in commercial baby powders. Cornstarch can cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive or allergic to corn or corn products

Eucalyptus - Antiseptic, antiviral & anti-bacterial . Helps heal athlete’s foot and other fungal infections as well as cuts, burns and insect bites.
Fragrance Oil - Synthetic oils used for creating a specific fragrance.
Frankincense - Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and astringent.

Glycerin (Vegetable Glycerin)
Glycerin is a soothing, humectant which draws moisture from the air to the skin. It is also an emollient, which makes the skin feel softer and smoother & reduces cracking and irritation. It is non-toxic, non-irritating and non-allergenic. It is a natural by-product of the soaping industry.
Glycolic Acid-An Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) made from sugar cane juice or fruit such as apples and/or grapes.
Goat Milk - Goat milk leaves the skin feeling silky smooth and is an effective and softening skin cleanser. Milk proteins smooth, firm and soften the skin. Milk is high in hydrophilic (water) and lipophilic (fat) factors and has beneficial vitamins and sugars. Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein - A protein from wheat which has been partly turned into water through hydrolysis. Proteins are the nitrogen carrying constituents of living cells. Protein treatments are said to be beneficial to hair and skin. They add gloss, body and luster to hair. Proteins consist of giant chains of amino acids, the building blocks of life. The amino acid chains are joined chemically by a peptide bond. Proteins are excellent for skin and hair and deposit a protective film on them that is smoothing and moisturizing.
Hydroxymethylglycinate - A broad spectrum antimicrobial that is active against Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, yeast and mold. It is used at extremely low concentrations between .1% to 1% at the most. It is active at all alkaline pH levels as well as acidic conditions. It acts for both preservation and neutralization. There are no ingredients used in cosmetics that render it non-effective. Sodium hydroxymethylgycinate is derived from glycine, which is a naturally occurring amino acid that is classified as nonessential. Glycine is made up of sweet-tasting crystals and is used as a dietary supplement and as a gastric antacid. Amino Acids are widely used in cosmetics because they help penetrate the skin. The use of Hydroxymethylglycinate as a preservative does not appear to give any additional safety problem to consumers, as long as the maximum authorized concentration of this compound is maintained.

Iron oxides include Yellow Oxide, Red Oxide and Black Oxide.
KaolinClay(white or pink) - Is also called "China Clay." Kaolin is one of the purest clays. Widely used in creams & masks it has exceptional healing powers and is great as a baby powder. As with all clays, very useful for absorbing odors and is effective as a deodorizing body powder. Milk Thistle Seed Powder - Natural colorant, rich tan in color.

Parsley Powder - Anti-inflammatory and rich in vitamin c.
Patchouli - Anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti viral, astringent, bactericidal. Relieves athlete's foot, cracked and chapped skin and is a good insect repellent. Is appeasing, calming and uplifting.
PEG 150 - Fully hydrogenated jojoba wax that is the most water soluble form of jojoba available. Hydrogenated Jojoba is commonly used in cosmetic formulations.

Polysorbate 80 - Functions as an emulsifier, holding water and oils in suspension. It is used in various foods and supplements. It is derived from the fatty acids of vegetable oil that has undergone "esterification," a chemical process that changes the oil molecule, which keeps other ingredients from separating.
Quarternium-79 - A mild, cleanser that is good for both skin & hair. Sandalwood - Antiseptic, astringent, anti-bacterial and soothing.
Seaweed - Contains B complex vitamins, Vitamin D, E, K, magnesium and calcium. Those allergic to iodine should avoid kelp and kelp products.
Sea Salt- regulates the skin's moisture levels to promote healing, and draw out toxins. Helps to release tension and sooth sore muscles.
Silk Amino Acids -The mixture of amino acids resulting from the complete hydrolysis of silk. The amino acids contained within are glycine, alanine, and serine. These amino acids can penetrate the cuticle in undamaged hair as well as the surface layer of the epidermis. Silk amino acids improve the look and feel of skin and hair and have a moisturizing effect due to their water-binding properties.
Sodium Hydroxide - (lye) A caustic alkali used in making hard soaps. It is produced by processing salt water.
Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate - Derived from coconut and palm oils; a very mild surfactant (foaming agent) for both skin and hair. This mild, plant derived surfactant creates a rich, luxurious lather that effectively removes surface oil, dirt and bacteria, without stripping or drying sensitive skin.
Sorbitol - Occurs naturally in ripe berries, cherries, plums, pears, apples, seaweed and algae. Used in hair and skin products as a humectant and for it's ability to give skin and hair a velvety feeling.
Spearmint - Known uses are for acne, dermatitis, and congested skin. Promotes healing.
Stearic Acid - Naturally derived from soybeans. Helps to create a hard, longer lasting bar of soap.
Sweet Orange - Very uplifting. Stimulates circulation, fights infection and reduces inflammation.
Tea Tree - Active against all three varieties of infectious organisms: bacteria, fungi and viruses. Helps acne & athlete's foot. Properties include anti-infectious, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-viral, and others.

Titanium Dioxide - Used in cream to block the sun’s rays and prevent sunburn. It is is also commonly found in makeup and white soap bases, but not in a strong enough concentration to act as an effective sunscreen.
Turbinado Raw Sugar - A crystalized sugar that has a tan to brown color, it is an excellent organic exfoliant and is known as a demulcent, which is a substance used to relieve pain in inflamed or irritated mucous surfaces.
Vinegar-Wonderful rinse for hair when infused with essential oils. Restores the ph balance to your hair and scalp, resulting in shiny manageable hair.
Vitamin E (tocopherol) - Acts as a free radical scavenger (free radicals have been associated with skin cancer and premature skin aging due to sun exposure). Vitamin E also hinders the oxidizing process in the skin and promotes soft and supple skin. As an antioxidant it defends the skin and is helpful in reducing the appearance of scars and promotes healing. Vitamin E oil is an emollient and helps make the skin feel softer and smoother, reduces cracking and irritation. It is also said to retard the fine wrinkles caused by aging. (some experts believe antioxidants are the most vital weapons in the fight against aging.) Most of the damage of our skin is caused by a free-radical attack from smoke, pollution and UV rays. Free radicals then turn the oils of our skin rancid, which damages the collagen. Collagen is the protein fibers that serve as the building blocks of our skin. Antioxidants are used in skin care products to neutralize free radicals before they ravage the skin.

Evening Primrose - This oil is taken from the seeds of the flower and is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids such as linoleic. It is effective for a number of skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis.
Grapeseed Oil - Rich in vitamins, minerals and linoleic acid. A light oil which absorbs easily into the skin leaving no oily residue. great for lotions or massage oils.
Hazelnut Oil - high in unsaturated fats
Helichrysum - is believed to be exceptional in skin care with regards to bruises and scarring. Many people have claimed great success in treating scars and bruises by mixing Helichrysum with Rosehip Seed Oil.
Hemp Seed Oil - rich in vitamins A and E as well as essential fatty acids and protein which soothes and heals dry and/or irritated skin. Wonderful for hair care products.
Illipe Butter-The Illipe tree (Shorea Stenoptera) is a tree which grows in the forests of Borneo. Illipe butter has long-lasting moisturizing and skin softening properties. Prevents drying of the skin which leads to the development of wrinkles. Reduces degeneration of skin cells and restores skin flexibility and elasticity.
Jojoba Oil - promotes softer more supple skin, while being non-greasy. This oil is easily absorbed by the skin. Jojoba oil will help to nourish the skin and prevent dryness. It is a good conditioner for all skin types, especially mature skins. Jojoba is also effective for dryness and dandruff and can be massaged on its own into the hair and scalp.
Kokum Butter-Obtained from the fruit of a tree grown in India (Garcinia Indica). This butter has excellent emollient properties. Great for dry, cracked skin.
Kukui Nut Oil - non-greasy, high in essential fatty acids and easily absorbed by the skin. Research has shown that this oil can be used to help with acne, eczema, sunburn and more.
Lanolin- Lanolin-A naturally derived emollient that is extracted from sheep’s wool. It is easily absorbed into the skin, has wonderful staying power and will remain on your skin longer than other oils. Great for helping dry, irritated skin, diaper rash and protects and adds shine to coarse hair. Some people are sensitive or are allergic to this oil. Gives soap a creamy lather.
Macadamia Nut Oil - Like Kukui Nut oil, a true luxury oil. Also easily absorbed into the skin.
Mango Butter-It has great emolliency and lends a protective effect against the sun. It is said to prevent drying of the skin and formation of wrinkles. It reduces degeneration of skin cells and restores flexibility.
Meadowfoam Oil- Is said to moisturize the skin and hair better than most oils and help prevent moisture loss. Also wonderful in lip balm and lotions.
Mowrah Butter- Obtained from the fruit of the Indian tree (Madhuca Latifolia). From its seed kernels the butter is extracted and further processed and refined to obtain a yellow/white butter. Prevents drying of the skin and development of wrinkles. Reduces degeneration of skin cells and restores skin flexibility.
Neem Oil - Neem oil has antiseptic properties and can be used in the treatment of dandruff, skin conditions, and oily skin. This oil also has use in insect repellants.
Olive Butter- Has the same mild moisturizing qualities of olive oil.
Olive Oil - This oil is moisturizing and is mild and by itself (castile soap) produces a very mild soap suitable for small children or those with sensitive skin.
Palm Kernel Oil - produced from the palm tree and is highly saturated and contains large proportions of lauric acid. Helps produce a nice hard bar of soap.
Peanut Oil - rich in vitamin E, non-drying, conditioning, and is readily absorbable.
Rice Bran Oil-Contains the highest amount of all natural vitamin E in liquid form. Also rich in phytic and ferulic acids which promote a gentle form of exfoliation. It also contains proanthrocyanidins, which protect collagen and elastin to keep skin supple.
Safflower Oil - moisturizing oil.
Seabuckthorn Oil - rich in beta-carotene and high in vitamins A, E and linoleic acid which makes it a wonderful oil to use in applications to soothe and restore the skin.
Sesame Oil - contains a high percentage of unsaponifiables and has been theorized to contain antioxidant properties.
Shea Butter - Also called Karite butter & made from the fruit kernels of the shea nut tree of West Africa. Shea Butter benefits the skin in many ways:
Due to the presence of a sizeable quantity of unsaponifiable fats, its content in vitamins and other active elements; Shea butter is in a league of it's own when it comes to soothing, moisturizing and protecting qualities.
It has been shown to assist in cell regeneration & capillary circulation which helps in the healing of small wounds & skin ulcers.
It has restructuring effects on the epidermis and on dry, fragile hair and has been shown to help with dermatitis, eczema, minor burns and sun burn. In the cosmetic field, this makes Shea Butter a natural asset against skin aging.
It also displays a protecting role against UV rays because of its content in cinnamic acid.
It has an anti-elastase characteristic which makes it a good active ingredient against stretch marks.
It is very well tolerated by the skin and it does not normally trigger any allergic reactions. This makes it an excellent choice for use on sensitive skin areas such as the area around the eyes.
In our opinion, Shea Butter is an excellent skin softening & healing emollient that is an asset to any natural body care product that it is added to.
Soybean Oil - high in both linoleic and oleic acids and creates a soft soap.
Sunflower Oil - High in vitamin E, it is moisturizing and deposits a protective layer that holds in moisture.
Sweet Almond Oil - is rich in protein, emollient, and nourishing. A good source of vitamin D. Sweet almond is also very lubricating. This versatile oil can be used for all skin types, is gently lubricating and softening and is said to give it elasticity, helping to prevent wrinkling. Wonderful in massage oils or lotions..
Wheat Germ - is high in Vitamin E, which gives it powerful healing properties. Often included in a blend for its preserving and antioxidation properties. Helpful for aging and dry skin types as well as broken capillaries. It is also an anti-scarring agent and can be used to reduce scar tissue after injury or operations.
